Head Coach | Chris Merchant
Coach Chris brings years of playing and coaching experience to the Cannons, leading the program’s overall player development, game strategy, and pitching instruction. A four-year varsity player and multi-year team captain, he competed in the Junior College World Series (All-Tournament Team) before continuing his career at the Division II level, where he earned back-to-back Pitcher of the Year honors. He later pitched for the Front Royal Cardinals in the Valley Baseball League, earning All-Star recognition.
Chris is a member of the American Baseball Coaches Association and stays active in coaching clinics and development programs, ensuring players receive well-informed, modern instruction rooted in strong fundamentals and confidence-building. His passion lies in teaching players how to grow, compete, and love the game the right way—preparing them for the next level while helping them develop the character and resilience baseball is known for.

She brings a lifelong passion for athletics and a strong commitment to player development to the Winchester Cannons. With experience coaching varsity, JV, and middle school basketball — along with years of competitive sports through high school and collegiate play — she offers a well-rounded perspective on youth sports and athlete growth.
Laura is dedicated to helping young players build confidence, develop strong fundamentals, and understand the game from behind the plate and beyond. Her coaching approach is positive, intentional, and athlete-centered, creating an environment where kids feel supported, challenged, and inspired to grow.
Assistant Coach | Chris Rathel
Coach Chris R. brings the fun, heart, and positivity to the Cannons volunteer staff, specializing in team culture, confidence-building, and player support. He helps athletes feel comfortable, encouraged, and ready to take on new challenges — creating an environment where kids can relax, try new things, and grow at their own pace. A lifelong sports fan and the team’s biggest cheerleader, he keeps the energy high and the game enjoyable for everyone.
Beyond the excitement he brings to each practice and game, Chris is deeply committed to helping players build confidence and learn the life lessons baseball teaches — resilience, teamwork, humility, and celebrating progress over perfection. He believes that when kids feel encouraged and valued, they play harder, smile bigger, and develop as both athletes and young people. His steady presence, supportive coaching style, and genuine care make him an essential part of the Cannons family.
